CONCERT REVIEW

WHO: Son Volt
WHERE: Variety Playhouse, Atlanta, Georgia
WHEN: Saturday, September 24, 2005

Son Volt is the best band in the world. Of course, that’s how you’re supposed to feel just after a show, and Son Volt held up their end of the deal, so I’ll hold up mine. The band played for over two hours to a packed, lively house and performed thirty or so songs, including most of their new album, Okemah and the Melody of Riot.

One of my fellow concertgoers said the new stuff sounded better live than on the disc, and I’d have to agree. The high point of the show came near the end, when they reached back to the first album for “Windfall," “Tear Stained Eye," and “Drown” all in a row, lighting up the crowd. For the encore, Jay threw Uncle Tupelo fans a cookie with a rocking version of “Chickamauga.” A stellar show by a very good band.
